Exhibition “Thirty Years of Contemporary Linguistic Bosnistics (1990–2020)”, March 3–9, 2020

An exhibition of the books “Thirty Years of Modern Linguistics (1990–2020)” was opened at the Gallery of the Municipality of Novi Grad Sarajevo on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 as part of the Language Institute Days 2020 event. In the preparation of the exhibition the partners of Language Institute of University of Sarajevo were the University Library of the Džemal Bijedić University Mostar, the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Sarajevo) and the Library of the Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo. The authors of the exhibition are Edita Mulaosmanović (Mostar) and Jasmin Hodžić (Sarajevo). The exhibition lasted until Monday 9 March.

The exhibition features chronologically presented editions of the Bosnian language printed from 1990 to the present. The exhibition contains individual monographs on the status issues of the Bosnian language in history and in the contemporary period, followed by books on the language of Bosnian medieval legal documents, medieval religious writings and Bosnian inscriptions on tombstones; then monographs on the language of Bosnian alhamijado literature and “krajišnička pisma”, then books on the language of BiH writers and about Bosnian dialects and other professional publications on Bosnian grammar, stylistics, onomastics, Bosnian accents, methodology and general linguistics, and studies on other topics in contemporary linguistics. These editions are accompanied by several important Bosnian language manuals for foreigners, followed by several Bosnian grammars and over one hundred Bosnian dictionaries, with existing Bosnian spellings and language advisers. Also, Bosnian scientific and professional journals containing individual author’s works on different aspects of the study of Bosnian language are exhibited.

On the occasion of the opening of this exhibition of books on the Bosnian language, a public panel was held in the hall of the Municipality of Novi Grad. As the Mayor of Novi Grad, Mr. Semir Efendić, as host, welcomed the professors and students present, as well as the teachers, students and principals of Sarajevo schools, expressing his satisfaction with the cooperation with the Language Institute. Dr. Alen Kalajdžija pointed out that this is the first exhibition of its kind in the history of this country and that its aim is to draw the attention of the general public to the scientific, professional, educational and socio-political status of the Bosnian language in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the world.

Dr. Jasmin Hodžić, a research associate at the Institute for Language, spoke about the connection between social statement and organized care for a stable and sustainable scientific and research activity in the field of language as a natural, but also social category (especially standard language). As one of the authors of the exhibition, he briefly presented its contents, pointing to some crucial issues in various fields of linguistic bosnistics as a science of the Bosnian language.

MSc. Zenaida Karavdić, as a Research Assistant in Language Institute, presented a rich scientific research production contained in individual author’s articles, scientific and professional papers on Bosnian. The public panel was moderated by MSc. Aida Kršo from the Language Institute of the University of Sarajevo.
